Chapter Fourteen

Well, this was certainly a pleasant interlude.

Clutching my leather-bound folder, I stepped out into the sunshine to discover that Evelyn’s village was almost as lovely as Windsor. It was as if the quaint little village of Maiden Upon Avon had been dropped into the surrounding greenery a century ago and forgotten to modernise. I loved it!

As David and I walked with Evelyn down the main High Street, I noticed there were even more Beings of Magic here than in Windsor. Or perhaps they were just more ‘out’, due to the proximity of the magical land of Marvelton.

Regardless of species, Evelyn seemed to know everyone, and she proudly introduced me and David to her friends. Then, as we arrived at the police station, she smiled tenderly. “And here we’ll find the most magical being of them all.”

Aw, she was talking about her boyfriend...

The police station foyer was cool with its shiny marble floor and old-fashioned ceiling fan, which whirred on full speed above. I’d only been inside Windsor police station a couple of times, and the manic pace there swept you up in a frenzy of crime-fighting activity.

Maiden Police Station was quiet. Down one end, the desk sergeant was engrossed in a crossword.

Evelyn waved at her boyfriend, Detective Inspector Alex Taylor.

Dressed in his smart suit, he was chatting to a uniformed officer – and looking relaxed despite the heat. Last month, when he’d been on secondment in Windsor, Alex had threatened to arrest me for murder, before subjecting me to a gruelling interrogation. He was scary in police mode. But his face lit up as he saw Evelyn.

He excused himself from the uniformed officer and greeted her with a kiss on the cheek – the height of public affection for an Englishman like Alex.

“Hello, sir!” David shook Alex’s hand.

“Sergeant Van Danté – great to see you here.” Alex smiled sincerely. “How are things? How was the training course?”

“Jolly good, thank you, sir.” David gestured to the peaceful foyer. “But it all seems very small and quiet for you here?”

Alex smiled wryly. “You’d be amazed how many murders we get.”

“Well, if you ever get bored, please do come back to Windsor. I’m begging you!”

Alex chuckled. “I’m flattered. But I wouldn’t leave Maiden Upon Avon for a king’s ransom. Now come on, let’s go to the pub for a quick one.” He called out down a shiny corridor. “Max, here boy!”

Alex’s German Shepherd – who was affectionately known as Fuzzball – trotted into the foyer with his tail wagging, carrying his lead in his mouth. I gave him a cuddle, so happy to see him again, then off we set.

Just like so many traditional English pubs, The Coach and Horses was a crooked old Elizabethan building, with a sticky floor, wobbly tables, and a vegetarian vampire working behind the bar. Okay, that last one was highly specific to this pub.

The vampire barmaid was wearing a black velvet gown and more eyeliner than a 1970s rockstar. But as she saw David, she grinned toothily, then stepped out to embrace him.
